Monsignor John Barry, the pastor at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach since 1983, told parishioners Sunday he remains hospitalized as he continues recovery from the COVID-19 virus.
“I did go to the hospital on my doctor’s advice so they can keep a closer eye on me,” said the 82-year-old, who started feeling symptoms of the virus on March 16. He was tested the next day, went into self-quarantine and found the results on March 26, when he released the information in an email to parishioners, while revealing he has had “no life-threatening incidents” and was not using a ventilator.
“I ask that you continue to pray as my recovery continues,” Barry said Sunday, March 29. “I hope to come home in the next couple of days. And please pray for all who are ill, and also for all the healthcare workers at this time that God may continue to give them strength and keep them healthy. I continue to pray for all of you every day.”
American Martyrs School transitioned to remote learning on March 13, said Adrian Alarcon, Director of Media Relations for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
“Monsignor Barry did not have interaction with the student body at the school on the last day of school,” Alarcon said. “The last school Mass that he celebrated for the students at the school was three weeks ago, on March 6.”
American Martyrs has been doing live-streamed Masses, of which Barry last presided at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday, March 14, with those in attendance seated following distancing guidelines. Associate pastors Fr. Joe Kammerer and Fr. Rick Prindle have not shown symptoms of COVID-19 and have been celebrating livestreamed Masses on the past two Sundays. They have been in self-quarantine as the church has been closed.
The above comes from a March 30 story in Angelus News.
Prayers for your recovery, John, and for protection for all priests who wish to minister to God’s holy people.
Duplicate paragraphs.
Why not just call it Covid-19 in the headline.
I pray for the Monsignor’s recovery.
I don’t see any duplicate paragraphs. What are you talking about? And why change the headline?
Mike, Covid-19 is the scientific term (nerdy). ChiCom (Wuhan) Virus is the geographic eponym (concise yet unpretentious). Would you ask your dealer for Benzoylmethylecgonine or Crack? Personally, I’d go with Crack.
It’s appropriate that it’s called the Wuhan virus in the headline. The Communist Chinese government has lied about this disease since the beginning (and several good citizens have “disappeared” for speaking truthfully about it). The Communist government of China politicized this from the beginning. The Communist Chinese government has not been good for the people of China nor the Church in China nor any religious minorities or believers. Let’s simply be honest and not cave to the politically correct language the Chi Comms demand we use (or else they’ll call us “racists”).
Of course, let up pray for all.
The virus is called SARS-COV2, not the Wuhan virus. Those who want to rename it aren’t doing so for the sake of clairty in communicating something about medicine or science, but are instead attempting to make a political point. Because of that, anything else they have to say should be simply ignored.
The virus is known to have been in Wuhan, China since November. The World Health Organization announced in February 2020 that COVID-19 is the official name of the disease. They advised the public to not refer to Coronavirus as the “Chinese virus” or “Wuhan virus” and were complicit with the Communist Chinese government in covering up the magnitude of this pandemic. Diseases have been named after where they originated. So, YFC, there’s no Ebola (a river), Lyme disease, MERS, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, German Measles or, here in California, Valley Fever?! You can carry water for the brutal, totalitarian government that oppresses the Chinese people and the Church. I’ll have no part of that.
You are inorrect, Call It Like It Isn’t: The name of the virus isn’t the Wuhan virus. It just simply isn’t. It’s basically a lie to say that it is. Furthermore, the original article from Angelus News, doesn’t use the term “Wuhan Virus” in its headline or in the body of it’s story. The name of the virus – and the virus itself – isn’t about Communism or this government or that ideology. For more explanation, see https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/925710
YFC, would you mind answering the question I asked you: so, there’s no Ebola, Lyme disease, MERS, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, German Measles or Valley Fever?! Why do you object so strenuously to referring to this pandemic by its location of origin, as has been done previously?
Were you ever vaccinated against German measles?!
Lest you think I care only about Catholics, as Sohrab Ahmari wrote in the NY Post today about the government of the place where this pandemic started and was covered up, “a totalitarian Communist regime that, as we speak, keeps more than a million Muslims in ‘re-education camps,’ a regime that harvests the organs of political prisoners and thinks nothing of hiding the truth about a highly contagious virus ravaging a city of 11 million.” If you want to be a shill for Communist oppressors, you are free to do so. Thank God, we live in a free country (and still have freedom of speech, unlike in China and the “World Health Organization.”)
I doubt you will get a reply from him either as “Not Your Mama” and I are still waiting for Jon’s answer as to if he approves taking pagan idols into Catholic churches. Jon’s another slippery one. I call it COVID 19, but Patrick Coffin is calling it “the Commie virus”, a most apt term too.
The official name of the virus doesn’t reference a geopgraphy at all. You all deny that doing so is motivated by politics rather than science and medicine, yet you go on to provide a political justification for doing so. Do you al know better than Dr. Fauci?
YFC, No, I do not know better than Dr. Fauci about viruses (wherever they originate).
That said, why do you refuse to answer the simple question I raised twice previously?
I have loved ones suffering from chronic Lyme disease, I could call it some other name. Why in this case are you so insistent that THIS disease not be identified by its place of origin?
Your beloved World Health Organization identified MERS by its area of origin (check this out for yourself at their website):
“Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) is a viral respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, or MERS‐CoV) that was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012.”
I guess Arabs don’t have the clout with WHO that the Communists do.
Let me try this one more time. NONE of the viruses were named because of the political structure or the medical competency of the country or city in which the virus originated. ALL yall want to name it after Wuhan or China to make a political statement, not to make a geographic/descriptive statement, and you PROVED that by your explanations. You aren’t naming it that way just because you want to communicate something benign about its first place of origin. You want to name it that way in order to shame those people. Shaming peeople who, after all, haven’t chosen their form of government, should never be a part of a catholic motivation or website. It has nothing to do with clout or any of that nonsense.
YFC, are you happy now?
After telling the world that it would donate masks, face guards and testing equipment to Italy, the Communist Chinese government quietly backtracked and sold the country desperately-needed medical equipment, according to a report.
What’s worse is that the personal protective equipment (PPE) China forced Italy to buy was actually the same PPE Italy donated to China before coronavirus rushed its own shores and killed nearly 16,000 people!
The Chi Comms politicized and covered up this pandemic from the beginning and now they’re profiting from it.
Are you okay if we call it the “Commie flu” (as noted above)?
And, I hope none of your loved ones ever get Lyme disease because you’d refuse to refer them a support group or help with research and treatment, simply because they use a location name to describe their disease. That’s nonsense.
I will keep his good health in my Rosary later.
And the others too.
Original article had two duplicate paragraphs when originally posted, subsequently changed. That was the purpose of that part of my comment.
