The Vatican’s Amazon Synod is done. But its mischief lives on in the ideological distortions of its final document, “Amazonia: New Ways For The Church And For A Holistic Ecology.” The crudity of its j’accuse against the developed world disfigures classical Christian stress on responsibility to the poor.
A fusion of reflexive leftism and religious idiom, “Amazonia: New Ways” is a showpiece of crisis-mongering, nature mysticism, and hostility toward technological development. The text clamors for “environmental conversion,” a demand built on overwrought borrowings from the climate change script (e.g., the rainforest is in “an unbridled race to death”).
Militant ecology and social justice are believed to be “intrinsically linked.” Consequently, promotion of “social transformation” — a.k.a. activism — is a necessary aim of education. In sum, the synod provides a syllabus for rancor toward the West, its supporting structures, and its people.
The document repeats Pope Francis’ animus toward fossil fuels, which he delivered last year to a conference of oil executives and investors: “The use of energy should not destroy civilization!” Jabs at “predatory extractivism,” in tandem with other ecological sins, are a recurring refrain.
In the dock are fossil fuels, plastics, and Western eating habits (“excess consumption of meat and fish/shellfish”). The developed world must atone with “more sober lifestyles.” Shrill demand for “radical energy transition” accompanies support for divestment campaigns against “extractive companies.” There is an urgent call for “new economic resources” — read taxes — as penance for Western affluence.
Most worrisome is the text’s preoccupation with aboriginal ethnicity (“peasants, people of African descent, mestizos, river dwellers”) and the glorification of tribal cultures unsoiled by modernity. Young Amazonians must be educated “for solidarity” in the romance of “a common origin.” In this context, it is a short walk to the enthusiasms of blood and soil.
Insistence on an “Indian theology, theology with an Amazonian face,” follows earlier liberation theologies, such as black theology and Palestinian liberation theology. In practice, each variation affirms the primacy of race, distorting the concept of the people of God (and consequently condemned by Pope Benedict). “Amazonia: New Ways” explicitly moves church goal posts from the “preferential option for the poor” (a liberationist trope established in Medellín, Colombia, in 1968) to a “preferential option for indigenous peoples.” Implicit in that swap is what Pascal Bruckner called “the racism of the anti-racists….”
The above comes from a Dec. 11 story on The Federalist.com.
I have no doubt we need technology to advance so that our reliance on fossil fuels decreases. I would assume, therefore, that Francis would praise any and all efforts by technologically advanced nations to use scientific research to advance that goal. And if Francis really believes this goal as well, I expect that he will lead the way in avoiding the use of such fuels: 1). stop flying hither and yon; 2). Use Skype or some other format for ad limina visits from bishops around the world; 3). praise those countries who have worked to reduce pollutants; and 4). adopt a vegan diet; finally 5). make sure his life-style mimics the “tribal cultures unsoiled by modernity,” whatever that means.
AKA: Lead by example.
The article “Polls Find Most People Would Rather Be Annihilated By Giant Tidal Wave Than Continue to Be Lectured by Climate Change Activists” says it all. We know “dear Greta” is being thoroughly coached by adults as what to say when she should be just enjoying her childhood. We also get sick and tired of being lectured not to have too many children by men like the one who could not wait until his “dear wife” was dead in her grave from breast caner before he had another woman pregnant..We also know that some indigenous tribes, such as the Huron of North America, often depleted the forests around them and moved on before the white men ever came. Sinner all, aren’t we?
Correction to last sentence: Sinners all, aren’t we?
I am going to stop posting on this website for awhile as much as this just makes me angry, and I have begun to write things, that may or may not be helpful to others doing the right thing, even though I do not use names. Time to go read the American Life League articles about how “brain death” is not really “brain death”. Articles I highly recommend.
Correction: oops! brain death is not really death.
Fundamentally, we are one human race, one human family. And, all are invited to be part of the People of God, the Church. I pray the Church, which of course is universal, never descends into group identity politics and tribalism. Some of this strikes me like Marxist class warfare jargon, pitting groups of people against one another. That would be tragic.
Maybe a good papal and Vatican advisor would be a young lay person, Alexander Tschugguel, the pachamama extractor.
Good catch, “reverend X.” Alexander Tschugguel, who is a convert, has stepped up in a major way in his efforts to re-assert Christian Western Culture, which is nurtured by the Catholic Church.
The findings of the synod are correct. St Thomas Aquinas warned about the destruction of the earth by humanity in one of his visions towards the end of his life.
That is not the point. I recycle all the time, try not to use too much gas, etc. The point is that many things that are not good for the environment are never brought up, such as the fact that the contraceptive pill helps pollute the water and deforms our sea life, not just plastics which can be recycled. In other words the environmentalists are very selective in what they they disapprove. Has it ever occurred to them that divorcing ones spouse, especially if one has had children by him or her, and marrying another causes harm to the environment and society? It takes more houses and everything else to support two separated families than it does for one couple with several children.
Trumpovsky: Document your statement, please.
How dare you ask Trumpovsky, or anyone for that matter, to document something they claim to be true, especially if they drop a big name! And, names, and people, don’t get much bigger than the Dumb Ox or Chesterton. Don’t you know that “document” is a Western-privilege “trigger” word that is offensive to the inclusive and enlightened like me?!
Cute! your post is better than mine, or at least a close second. Stay safe!
I would like to clarify one thing, though, before I stop posting. I was joking with the poster “Safe Space” as I assume he or she was writing “tongue in cheek” (using satire).
Yes, my tongue is planted more firmly in my cheek than Catholic faith and practice are planted in the hearts of some Catholic leaders like Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Biden. If one is really looking for a “safe space,” it’s the bosom of Christ and the Church.
Our beloved Dominican “Angelic Doctor,” the greatest theologian of all time– St. Thomas Aquinas– wrote five great Eucharistic Latin poems, set to music — five of the greatest Catholic liturgical hymns of all time! “Lauda Sion,” “Pange Lingua,” “Sacris Solemniis,” “Verbum Supernum,” and beautiful “Adoro Te Devote!” LOVE them ALL!!
P.S. I am a different “Anon.!” LOVE the “Angelic Doctor!”
It was devastating, after the Council, to see St. Thomas Aquinas ignorantly mocked and ridiculed, by many leading Catholic clerics!
Trumpovsky, is the vision of St. Thomas Aquinas that you mentioned, related to the apocalyptic visions of St.John?? Also, doesn’t the Bible say that mankind has sinned, and nearly destroyed the earth in past eons– and has gotten in big trouble with God?? (Oh– I am a different “Anon.” than the other poster!)
I just read that the U.S. now has the world’s highest rate of children living in single-parent families! Shocking! How many are Catholic?? And what can the Pope do about this situation?? Anything?? Money certainly won’t fix this sad plight! But good Catholic moral and spiritual leadership can certainly help!
what a diversion from the Light of the World
