Juanita Salas, Community Engagement & Public Affairs Manager | Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest

The mission of Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest is to ensure broad public access to reproductive healthcare through direct service, education, and advocacy.

Background

The following comes from an Aug. 9, 2012 story in the Imperial Valley News.

El Centro resident Juanita Salas has joined the staff at Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest as the health care agency’s founding Community Engagement Manager in Imperial County.

Salas will be responsible for facilitating, coordinating, representing and advancing the mission of Planned Parenthood by contributing to and strengthening partnerships through education, community collaboration, volunteer engagement and outreach.

Born and raised in Imperial Valley, Salas served as senior community representative for Congressman Bob Filner. For more than seven years, she represented the Congressmember and ran the Imperial Valley district office.

“I am honored to be joining such a great team and am ready to work with our community to bring about positive, healthy change for our youth and parents of Imperial Valley.  I am an advocate for healthy communities,” explains Salas. “My passion for the mission and values of the organization is what make me so excited to join the Community Engagement Team at Planned Parenthood.  The organization is a great resource of information for people who have questions about important health issues, but don’t know where to turn to get the answers.”

Salas has served in community-based service learning projects working with international education policy.  She has also worked with populations with AIDS, and held positions in international relations in South Africa, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Mexico.  Salas has numerous civic affiliations, where she currently serves as President-Elect of MANA de Imperial Valley and President-Elect of Soroptimist International Club of Calexico.

Salas studied liberal arts with an emphasis in political science at San Diego State University, where she was elected to serve as president and CEO of SDSU Associated Students Inc. There she represented more than 33,000 students at the local, state, national, and international levels.
