Father Joesph Illo, pastor of Star of the Sea in San Francisco, gave a 14-minute homily of Sunday, July 12.
Go to the 4 minute 05 second marker of the video:
Our church leaders are hoping that when the church restrictions are lifted that people will all come back to Mass. I don’t see it , Before Covid, 75 percent of Catholics did not come to Mass every Sunday on a regular basis. How many of the 25 percent attending will return? I think we’ll be down to 5-10 percent of card-carrying Catholics.
Traditional Latin Mass parishes like Star of the Sea will stand because they truly fulfill the spiritual needs of the parishioners. The rest will end up like the dodo.
it has less to do with the latin mass and more to do with people of like mind driving long distances to be with others of like mind, like a club. other parishes that foster like-mindedness in other ways will also survive. it’s not the latin mass, it’s having a club identity that appeals to enough people
It is the reverence of the Latin Mass!
Yep!
true
Pre-covid, how many so called Catholics attended Mass who didn’t believe in the real presence (I believe 70% according to the USCCB’s own numbers)? How many of them use contraception, which is a mortal sin? An extremely high number. How many of them believe in abortion? Support sodomy? When’s the last time (other than at a Latin Mass parish), you’ve seen a line at the confessional?
Look at the Corey character commenting on this thread. You don’t need to be able to read souls to see that he hasn’t one sliver of the faith. Not one. And yet he admits to presenting himself for Communion (one wonders why).
My point is this: how much sacrilege has occurred at each and every Mass, committed against our Lord at His most vulnerable, in the Eucharist? It’s staggering. How long do you think He puts up with that? And in His mercy, how long does He watch these so called Catholics heap more and more condemnation on themselves by committing these acts of sacrilege?
The lukewarm, the CINO’s, the Coreys of the world will be the ones bailing. They weren’t really in Communion to begin with. Pray for them that they convert before it’s too late.
I didn’t watch the homily so maybe Father addressed that. Somehow I doubt it.
But from where I sit the weekly injuries against our Eucharistic Lord will not be so much piled upon Him. The souls crushing themselves with acts of sacrilege will no longer do so and hopefully repent. For that I say Deo Gratias.
“Pre-covid, how many so called Catholics ,,,” Who are you to judge? The mission of the church is to bring non-believers into the faithg, teach them the faith, and ask them to commit to the faith. “so called Catholics” implies that you have a timus test for who can seek to know Christ better. The Catholic faith teaches that we are on a journey to meet Christ. it doesn’t happen in a magic presto moment. Being this judgemental about people’s beliefs is what drives them away from the church, saying it out loiud or posting t on the internet makes them race away from the church.
Sheesh…what a pessimist…
He might be right. Surely he will be right if the Church is more concerned with itself than with the people whose souls it is meant to save.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. We can proclaim a God of love and compassion, save bodies and souls at the same time.
Actually has nothing to do with what you’re saying. The Church has a huge PR problem when people like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates and all the tech titans are doing more good for the world than the Church and its clergy. Ask a sampling of people if they had to choose, would the world be worse off without Tesla and Facebook or without the Church. The answers you will get will show that the Church is pretty much obsolete in people’s minds right now. The Church has become like the rotary phone. Hardly useful for anything. The world has moved on.
The Gates are not good people. If I had taken the contraceptive pills one of my doctors wanted to give me, I would have been dead about twenty-nine years ago. I was saved from my small cancers growing faster because I never took the Pill nor estrogen on a regular basis. Many women, much younger than I was, have died from complications caused by such pills. You also need to look into what horrible consequences have resulted in India from the Gates Foundation using young children as experiments for their vaccines, especially the HVP.
Oops! not so sure I was right about my post today, July 17, at 10:34 am. Some things about her have come up since I last read her history many, many years ago, or perhaps I got her mixed up with someone else.
Ah, more fruit from Gomez consecrating the United States to Mary. Such blessings!
Um, yeah… people are beginning to realize that maybe all this talk about grace from the sacraments isn’t what it’s made out to be. I haven’t gone to Communion since the pandemic began, and I don’t miss it and don’t notice any adverse effects from not having received Communion. I’m living a perfectly okay life without it. So it makes me think, why do I even need it? What difference does it make? You’re going to have two or three generations of people raised Catholic who will realize after this is over that you don’t go to hell for missing Mass and that Mass really doesn’t do anything for them. Disagree if you want, but that’s what people are thinking. Life goes on just fine without Mass. If the sacraments were that important, priests would be risking their lives to offer them. But now we’re closed again, No sacraments for the people, and they won’t notice their absence in their lives. Ho-hum.
If you don’t miss the Sacraments, there is something seriously wrong with your soul. You need to speak with some holy priest A..S.A.P.
Corey…Do you believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Host and Wine? Apparently you couldn’t if you dismissed so easily not receiving Holy Communion all these months. I think a basic Catholic education is what’s missing in your life.
“What difference does it make?”
For you? Nothing. It appears your path is set.
Corey, there is a dispensation so you are not sinning by missing Mass. You can worship God, give him thanks, ask for his help and tell him you are sorry for your sins outside of Mass and you should. Mass is Calvary. The Apostles ran away. They were sought out by Jesus after his Resurrection to be the one’s to spread his message and Mass all over Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth. You are blessed and should be humbled to be invited to Mass. So many still have not heard and understood. Please pray for the spread of the Gospel and for all to understand the value of the Mass. So many Christians (245 million) live in places where it is not safe to be Christian. Over 4000 Christians were killed in one year. Over 1000 Churches have been bombed or otherwise destroyed. Glad you life is going on just fine. Pray for those whose lives are a living hell and their source of strength, consolation and reason to live is the Holy Mass.
Wow, are these comment from actual Catholics? Very disturbing to say the least.
A couple of thoughts. The TLM isn’t a “better, more revertant Mass” than the Ordinary version, just different and should be available for those who prefer that version. The good Father many be on to something. Most of us haven’t been to church since February and it is unlikely we will get back before next February at the earliest, if not a year later. It depends on how many of us wear a mask outside the home and follow the other guidelines. If people don’t attend Mass for a year or more, what will be the pull to get them back? I know the religious answers to that question, but what about reality. I tried to watch the Sunday Mass on Youtube, but the quality of the productions, the terribly delivered sermons, the lousy music, is a complete turn-off. Watch some of the Lutheran services or other traditional denominations, and you will see the difference. Their sermons are related to the readings, well thought out and well delivered. I know a Lutheran Pastor who spends at least one to two hours each day preparing his Sunday sermon, and then spends a couple of hours more on Saturday practicing in the pulpit. He is typical. He still has time to visit the sick, counsel parishioners, attend daily events at the church, and still make it to most of his kids soccer games (before covid 19).
The TLM is more reverent. Different emphasis, different canonical order.
Sure. Become a Lutheran. Great idea, Anonymous. My other comment is awaiting moderation. If it appears you’ll be able to see how you perfectly make my point.
I have been to confession twice since the shut down, Communion on the tongue once and had things blessed by a priest, also have watched on line Masses. It’s out there if you want it. Perhaps Christ IS separating the sheep from the goats as he always has been.
The TLM is more reverent. I wished I lived in an area where I could attend more often.
The confessions and Mass I attended were outdoors, though.
I was also exposed to COVID, not at the Mass where I took Communion on the tongue, but from an extended family member later. Those of us who were exposed did not get it — tested negative several weeks after exposure.
Praise to God.
Amen!
Question for everyone: if Communion works like you say then why so many bad priests and bishops, who take Communion every day? And if you say that it’s because of sin, well isn’t Communon supposed to heal of sin? If it doesn’t help a priest or bishop be better and not sin, well then…? Maybe it’s just personal choice and Communion has no effect one way or the other.
With all due respect, Corey, you might ask why there are so many good and holy priests and bishops who take communion every day? These don’t make the headlines; their virtue is therefore hidden from most of us. The body and blood, soul and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ is not a magic elixir. It must be received devoutly, with due reverence with thanksgiving. Sometimes we may feel an elevation of soul, sometimes not. That is up to our Lord, who dispenses consolations as He wills and when He wills. Our duty is to come to Him with humility and expectation and leave all else to God.
Because they are in a state of unrepentant sin, therefore they eat and drink their own condemnation. Just like St Paul said.
My family and I have been intensely disappointed that the Church in CA just meekly acquiesces to every closure order. Despite Christ saying that unless we eat His Flesh and drink His Blood we shall not have life within Him, the Church has not fought for my right to receive Him in the Most Blessed Sacrament. We have not heard one word of protest! The subliminal message is that Mass must not be essential. Every local Church went to great measures to protect parishioners during reopening. Churches were probably the safest places to be outside of one’s own home. Newton did not offer a shred of proof that rising COVID numbers are due to Churches, but the Churches just rolled over and accepted his order without a squeak. Early Christians risked martyrdom to go to Mass, yet our leaders do nothing. Shame on them! What a great evangelical opportunity is being missed. If people saw that the Church is defying Newsom (all precautions in place, of course) because it believes that the worship of God and reception of the Eucharist is ESSENTIAL, and that bishops, priests and parishioners are willing to be arrested for going to Mass, the pews would be filled as never before.
There is a LOT of evidence that COVID is spread in Churches and other interior places with poor ventilation and people talking and singing. Most of the cases of COVID in South Korea were traced to a fake Christian sect. Many many other cases of choirs, even distanced choires, getting almost completely infected because of one infected member.
Outside masses are probably safe if people mask and distance. Distribution of communion is probably safe if precautions are taken. But inside masses, no way.

The New York Times has no credibility.
The New York TImes has no credibility among people who value facts and good reporting.
YFC, the NY Times is an anti-Catholic, rag, it has nothing but contempt for the Faith….
Funny correction: At 11:34 AM I meant to say: The New York TImes has no credibility among people who DON”T value facts and good reporting.
Folks, if you find an error in an article I post, by all means tell us what that error is. But you just look silly when you tell everyone that everything an outlet reports has no credibility when in fact, the entire world knows that The New York TImes is one of the best papers in the world.
You need to read about Bari Weis and how she scorched the NYT in her resignation letter.
Kevin T., that is all about the opinion page at the Times. What are the factual errors in the article I posted? Please name one factual error and tell us all why it is in error. Because there are disagreements about the opinion page doesn’t mean the entire paper should be used to wrap the fish. I’ll bet you didn’t stop watching Fox News when Roger Ailes was accused of molesting 23 women, and that is far worse.
YFC the only people that think NY Times is one best newspapers in the world reside on the Upper West Side of Manhattan or on the West Coast… the rest of us know its woke trash
Where are the errors in the article I posted?
You realize that the Times is condensed for every leader of the world, right, if not read directly by them?
YFC, even the Times former editor, Bari Weiss has come out to admit the Times is nothing more than dictatorship of Wokeness.
The NY Times: all the news that is NOT fit to print!
My God, man, if you are defending the NYT as being an objective newspaper you are in such a tightly sealed, leftist, ideologically woke bubble that you need help. Get out into the real world some.
The list relevant statement from Corey: “ If the sacraments were that important, priests would be risking their lives to offer them.”
I think the intent of the secularists and, sadly, many of the bishops is that keeping the churches closed long enough will result in very few of them going back. As B XVI said many years ago, we will have a smaller, but more devout Church.
Life goes on just fine without Mass.
Yeah…life is just peachy right now….do you get the internet on your planet?
it will be a smaller but stronger church!
Wishful thinking?
It seems likely that the remnant attending in the future will be believing Catholics and not merely juridical Catholics. The Church will then be much stronger by having unity base on Truth and not on simple acquiescence to mob vote.
