Two-thirds of U.S. Catholics say that President Joe Biden, who has contradicted Church teaching on abortion, marriage, and gender ideology, should be allowed to receive Communion.
According to a Pew Research Center survey released on Tuesday, 67% of U.S. Catholics say that Biden should be allowed to receive Communion at Mass, while fewer than one-third (29%) believe he should not be allowed to receive.
Beliefs on Communion fell somewhat along party lines, with 55% of Catholic Republicans – or those who lean Republican – saying that Biden should be denied Communion, while only 11% of Democrats or those leaning Democrat saying he should be denied Communion….
Biden’s home bishop in Wilmington, Delaware – Bishop William Malooly – has said he would not deny Biden Communion over his problematic policy stances. Biden’s archbishop in D.C., Cardinal Wilton Gregory, has also said he would not deny Biden Communion….
Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco, in a January interview with EWTN Pro-Life Weekly, said that Communion could be withheld “for the sake” of someone’s “soul,” but only after “private conversations” had taken place between the pastor and the Catholic “to try to move the person in their conscience.”
Cordileone added that bishops must also be emphasizing the general teaching on worthiness to receive Communion – the necessity of not being conscious of serious sin and having fasted from food and drink for at least one hour.
“For that kind of action [denial of Communion] to make sense to a lot of people, we need to reclaim this sense of what it means to receive [Communion],” Cordileone said, citing a lack of belief in the Real Presence of the Eucharist among Catholics….
Elsewhere in the poll, 64% of Catholics said they thought President Biden was either “very” or “somewhat” religious.
The above comes from a March 31 story on the site of the Catholic News Agency.
Meaningless. 2/3 of “Catholics” don’t go to Mass and reject dogmas of the faith. Probably 90% or more overlap between phony Catholics and those who approve of Biden.
“Meaningless 2/3 Catholics” is exactly the issue here. First there is the polling agency, Pew Research. They will ask one question phrased in such a way as to encourage the response the Ruling Oligarchy desires. They will “ask” the people if they are “Catholic”. Many people likely to say they are “Catholics” are not practicing Catholics even in the Novus Ordo. How many times has the “lukewarm” Catholic phenomenon been condemned by the hierarchy? In fact, many influential USCCB prelates go out of their way to hammer those who are willing to criticize the prevailing Liberal Catholic leadership. Then there is the Novus Ordo that removed most if not all the penitential aspects of the Mass. There is no fear of God among these “lukewarm Catholics”. Their clergy even encourage them to take the morally tainted vaccine even when perfectly fine alternative preventatives and treatments are readily available. Then there is the sacrilege that the USCCB sponsored in forcing communicants to receive communion in the hand. Then there is the enforced silence about the clergy speaking of the Party of Death in the homily where it might be most effective. Finally, the USCCB gets the answer it wants: most “Catholics” are compliant or indifferent about the Party of Death regime, Pope Francis and his friends in the Great Reset.
Dear Mr. Teachout, there are at least three objectionable things in your post when you write “Their clergy even encourage them to take the morally tainted vaccine even when perfectly fine alternative preventatives and treatments are readily available.”
First of all, “their priests” are our priests. We just celebrated Holy Thursday. Christ did not institute a “their priesthood”.
Secondly, bishops and theologians around the world have nearly all said that the two most common COVID vaccines are not morally tainted, and that when their those are not available, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is morally justifiable in order to prevent the spread of a deadly disease.
Thirdly, there are no “perfectly fine alternative preventatives and treatments”. 955 people died in the US yesterday alone, 550,000 in the US since the pandemic. COVID was the third most common cause of death in the US in 2020. On the other hand, deaths in nursing homes is down dramatically because of early vaccination efforts in those places.
A disease with a 99.7% survival rate…
If you get the virus, the average person has about a 98% survival rate. About six times more deadly than you are saying. If you are elderly or have some commorbidities, or you live in a place where the healthcare system is inadequate or overwhelmed, your survival rate is much much lower – almost 15 times more lethal than your number. Please tell the truth. This is Good Friday for crying outloud.
Sorry, I accidently clicked thumbs down.
I apologize for accidently clicking thumbs down on a post I didn’t read and someone gave me a thumbs down for that.
LOL
I can see how this is going to be used to abuse.
Why dont you just be quiet?
349K dead from the Covid in 2020. Tragic? No. Life is life.
Hell, 160k died from stroke.101k for diabetes. 200k from unintended injuries. Why aren’t on here beating the drums about obesity and alzheimers? Or, people falling off ladders or electocuting themselves while changing a power cord, or fall down in the bathtub?
Stop trying to scare people who are trying to live their lives. Don’t go away mad. Just go away.
I don’t think it’s a particularly good thing to tell people who are trying to save lives and combat false information that might save lives to just go away. There is a constant drumbeat of people about abortion who want to save lives. Are you telling them to go away?
No I didn’t think so.
(For YFC) Most Americans are not educated about mortality data. This is understandable, especially because the average person avoids death, and does not wish to think about dying.
So they are easily deceived by those who can cause panic about a disease, especially one called a pandemic.
It is difficult, but mortality rates most be stated and understood by the average person.
Below are the statistics for average mortality rates in the US. (Normal, everyday facts)
The Death rate in the US is around 65,000 a week, or a quarter of a million a month, or 3 million or more, a year.
That is the average rate for all causes, cancer, heart disease, flus, viruses, accidents, etc.
Thus, when the media visits a typical hospital, there will always be patients who are ill or dying. It is not at all unusual, but normal. So these frightening, scary media reports, are mostly about Average Daily Mortality. So you as a viewer of the news, seeing people wearing masks, or unconscious, or dying – alas, for us as humans, it is entirely normal. And as a final statistical data remark, the US death rate in the 70s, during the Swine flu epidemic, was higher than the current US death rate during this coronavirus. The US did not shut down business in the 70s, or force mask wearing, so life could continue as normal. And lastly, you should realize, that there are viruses and flus every single year – we will have many virus deaths next year, and the year after, and the year after that, continuing on for our entire lives. The choice then is yours – do you wish to continue your life wearing masks, and not working, or do we carry on, as was done for all the past history of humans…
YFC we are not in same Church no matter how you try to spin it… with your rainbow flags and affirmation of sodomy.. you are part of homo-heretical sect that is in operational control, much like the Arians of old.
“I don’t think it’s a particularly good thing to tell people who are trying to save lives and combat false information that might save lives to just go away. There is a constant drumbeat of people about abortion who want to save lives. Are you telling them to go away?”
It IS a good thing to challenge someone who constantly conflates the seriousness of the wuflu. And, consequently raises unjustified fears in others. A MINIMUM of reseatch on Wuflu will allow folks to judge their actions for themselves. YOU never do that. It;s only headline scare tactics from you. The wuflu is serious ONLY for those above a certain age and are affected with comorbidities.
The same goes for your constant drumbeat for masks, social distancing and lockdown paranoia. The data consistently shows they make no difference to infections rates.
I;ve asked you this before and I’ll ask again Why are you so fearful? Don’t you know this life is not your or others permanent home?
Another Pew survey (2019?) said 2/3’s of people who say they’re Catholic don’t go to Mass regularly….there a question here?
Roe v Wade remains the secular law of the land, while abortion is clearly against God’s Law. Pres. Biden has a secular duty to uphold the secular law. Otherwise, the US becomes a theocracy. As I remember my ninth grade civics class, the Congress shall make no law regarding establishment of a religion.
Biden does not have a duty to expand abortion and abortion funding, which he has already done and is doing. He does not have a duty to codify Roe into law; he has promised to do that if such a bill arrives at his desk. He does not have a duty to passively accept the current laws and jurisprudence concerning abortion; he may act to revise them so as to restrict or outlaw at least some abortions; he refuses to do that. He is not acting as a legislator nor executive whose conscience has been properly formed by natural law and Catholic moral doctrine.
Outlawing abortion would not be the establishment of religion. Your ninth grade teacher misinformed you. We don’t even need religious arguments to propose that abortion should be illegal. Biology confirms the baby in the womb is a human life, a separate human being from the mother. In all cases of human life outside the womb, it is criminal to kill an innocent life. Why is human life in the womb not similarly protected?
Ponitus Pilate took a poll, too, and we all know the results — Innocence Himself was put to death.
May God forgive me the times I have betrayed him whether intentionally or unintentionally.
“Lord give me Wisdom, the Attendant at thy throne”, and grant me final perseverance.
Mary, Seat of Wisdom pray for us.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph save souls.
Mike M – defending life in the womb does not make one a theocrat.
Mike M The same old tired arguments on abortion. It’s getting repetitious. Abortion is a “human rights issue” so therefore Biden has a secular duty to protect human life when millions are being exterminated in the womb. Would you agree if the secular issue were slavery? Please stop defending this very sick and confused man. He has already excommunicated himself with his support for child killing and sodomy. His secular duty is not to continue the slaughter of the innocents. He fails and even embraces this violence. Please answer, if slavery were legal would it be his secular duty to continue to defend it?
mikem– This Nation was founded on our Judeo-Christian Biblical heritage! All of our rights come from God, not Man! From time to time in our history, there have been evil laws made by evil men, that Christians strongly sought to get rid of! Some of these evil laws, made by evil men, pertain to slavery, rights of Blacks to attend a school, segregation, voting rights for Blacks, etc. Before landmark legislation in the 1950s and 1960s, Blacks, Mexicans, Indians, and others, were prohibited in many parts of the country, from eating in restaurants, going to city parks, recreation centers and swimming pools, shopping at many stores, getting services done in beauty salons, attending theaters, staying in hotels, burials in cemeteries (“whites only”), attending “white” elementary schools, high schools, and colleges, joining many types of civic and other organizations, or buying a home in most places. And no jobs for them– discrimination was horrible! When the famous Black movie star, Hattie McDaniel, won an Oscar in 1940 for Best Suppirting Actress for her role as “Mammy” in “Gone With The Wind” (1939) she was forbidden to attend the film’s premiere at a theater (“whites only”) in Atlanta, or attend the Oscar’s ceremony in L.A. (at the Ambassador Hotel). She was allowed to sit at a table outside the Oscar’s ceremony, and some actors (including Clark Gable, I think) came there to congratulate her– and express their sorrow for this horrific, outrageous evil indignity to her! We must never, never heartlessly accept, support, and uphold man’s evil laws! We must seek to get rid of them! Otherwise– you will “gain the world, but lose your soul”– to Satan! A “hot seat in Hell” awaits! You have a Christian duty to upport the helpless unborn children, mikem! Go join Shawn Carney at 40 Days for Life! And repent, ASAP!
If your conscience is formed by any belief at all, it is either “theological” or “ideological”. Why should “ideological” be presumed to be any purer than “theological”? If I give a hungry person something to eat, or petition those in power to feed them, not only because I can empathize with their distress, but also because I know it is what God wants me to do, does that make me a “theocrat”? The “theocracy” trope is wet sand in a shallow river of thought.
Fr. Mark Goring CC has a three-minute commentary on this at:
Thanks Deacon great video! It’s quite revealing that the same amount of so-called Catholics don’t believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in Holy Communion.
Well, it is April Fool’s day….
I am a practicing Roman Catholic layperson who believes in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ, soul and divinity, in the Holy Eucharist. I also think President Biden should not be denied Holy Communion. Priests, Bishops, Cardinals and Popes all received Holy Communion in spite of participating in the sexual abuse of children or covering up these soul murdering sins. If they were and are allowed to receive Jesus, Our Lord and Savior, in Holy Communion then so should President Biden.
No one in mortal sin should receive Holy Communion, including clergy.
We should all repent of our sins and go to Confession before approaching the Holy Altar to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus, God Himself.
@ Harold – Your post is an example of moral relativism: The jaywalker gets a ticket, but cries out that others crossed the street illegally before him and he should therefore not be punished. Granted, I can understand your conclusion that Joe Biden in his moral corruption should be granted leniency because of the abject moral failures of some of our clergy. Many faithful Catholics have been deeply impacted by this betrayal and now witness a loss of so much moral authority by the Catholic hierarchy. However, those in our government who formulate laws have an obligation to correct morally defective laws, otherwise they are morally guilty of cooperating in evil.
Suggestion: can the webmaster add like and dislike buttons to comments? It would be interesting to see how many upvotes or downvotes comments receive.
@ Anonymous 10:34 – I have also requested up/down buttons numerous times.
I like that comment.
And who cares, on a Catholic website, about “votes”– what does Our Lord have to say? That is all that matters. Christ’s very life was put up for votes, by Pilate– and the evil crowd voted and chose the notorious prisoner (a murderer, I think)– Barrabas– not Christ.
“And who cares, on a Catholic website, about ‘votes'”?
I do, because it’s fun.
Juan– do you think 67% of “Catholics” really believe in sacriligious Communions for Joe Biden?? I think “votes” of “thumbs up or down,” only reflects your own viewpoint– but it has nothing to do with the post you are judging– and may have nothing to do with reality. How many “Bad Catholics” are out there, in California?? How many “thumbs-up,” will we now see, on a Catholic website– for posters who say things like the following: “Bad Catholic” politicians like Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi should receive Holy Communion, the Real Presence isn’t true, “gay” marriage ought to be instituted in our Church, David Daleiden should lose to Planned Parenthood and go to jail, we must keep Roe vs. Wade legal, federal funding for Planned Parenthood for abortions and giving sex ed. classes in the schools is a “must,” etc. etc. How many evil “thumbs-up,” are going to be waiting, out there– among “Catholic” posters???? I will not participate.
Deacon Craig: I agree with your post. However, many of the abusers did go to confession…and then continue with their abusive and sinful behavior. And their superiors knew this and allowed it.
I understand. That is deeply frustrating and angering. Yet, it is apparent that such men did not repent of their sins, which includes resolving to not commit further sins and making reparation or restitution as far as possible.
Harold– read St. Paul’s warnings on unworthy reception of the Sacraments– try I Cor. 11:27-30.
Judge not lest ye be judged.
“Stop judging by appearances but judge justly.” John 7:24. (Our Lord’s own words.) NAB.”
“It is widely reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of a kind not found even among pagans — a man living with his father’s wife. And you are inflated with pride. Should you not rather have been sorrowful. The one who did this deed should be expelled from your midst, …………etc.” 1 Corinthians 5:1-5, NAB.
Sometimes we are required to judge, but we must give fair, impartial and just judgements and make sure we are not doing the same thing ourselves. That is all the Lord meant.
Oh, we are thumbs-downing Scripture? Oh my…
I think the problem is that the quote from Scripture is incomplete and therefore misleading, and also that particular passage happens to be a favorite of ignorant anti-Christians who try to weaponize Scripture against Christians, arguing that Scripture teaches people not to judge at all, therefore Christians shouldn’t judge the acts of others. The truth is that if you read the rest of the passage and place it in context of other Scriptural teachings, the message is that we should not judge hypocritically nor arrogantly nor presumptuously; but we certainly may and must judge.
Matthew 7:1-5
Stop judging, that you may not be judged.
For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you.
Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye?
How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove that splinter from your eye,’ while the wooden beam is in your eye?
You hypocrite, remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye.
They’re thumbing down the misuse of Scripture to support America’s most prominent abortionist.
Polls are the definitive standard
for theological truth.
How many focus groups did Jesus run
before He started His Church???
Jesus had only One Focus Group, the Most Holy Trinity. He lived His earthly life before an “audience” of One, His heavenly Father.
Might we, by the grace of God, do the same?
Facilitating the murder of innocent human life is always objectively a grave, mortal sin. Biden has done much to facilitate abortion through legislation he promoted and endorsed How can any practicing Catholic be okay with this? This is not being judgmental. It is observing outward signs of real events. Does Biden get a pass because the rules are for me but not for thee? His behavior is reprehensible.
wrong
I can believe this. A local parish is filled with leftists who had zero problem voting for Biden. When asked about Biden’s pro-abortion actions, they say “That’s just one issue”, and that they “hate Trump”, although most asked were unable to coherently explain why they “hated” Trump. Apparently the CIA-CNN does their thinking for them, and they are apostates.
And of course God expects us to judge, to constantly be vigilant and discerning. We are not supposed to be Pharisees, however.
A local parish filled with leftists? I hardly know where to start. Most of the parishes I have belonged to over the years, including before VII, spent a lot of time and energy fighting the scourge of poverty in their community, feeding the hungry, advocating for better housing, etc. Does that make them leftists? Some say that there is only one issue to consider, abortion. Horrible as that is, there are many issues for the Catholic to support. We are not a one-issue faith. But to the point, what makes a man or woman in the pew a leftist? What do you mean by that?
I’d say if the man or woman in the pew supports legal abortion and supports same-sex marriage, you can bet the farm that he’s a leftist because those are leftist positions. That reduces to voting Democrat = leftist because Democrats support both of those things. So pretty much every Democrat is a leftist, whether he realizes it or not.
Try to stay calm, friends. While it does cause dyspepsia to see the most powerful man in the secular world, someone who identifies himself as a “Catholic”, take Holy Communion, and to see that thrown in our face day in and day out, God is not fooled, and God will not be mocked. St. Paul said very clearly that anyone who takes the Holy Eucharist unworthily has taken in condemnation upon themselves. There is a reckoning coming for every soul who does this, to one degree or another. We may not see justice, but justice will come. This is God’s realm, and He has already told us this is what happens.
I am not going to use the new “voting scheme.” If there are posts I especially like or those I do not agree with– I will say what I think, and always reference Catholic Teachings as my one and only guide. This is a Catholic website. All for Christ! Especially at Easter!
I agree. Although I do not see it as voting and it has been pretty amusing so far, you just have to be kind of mean to thumbs down someone’s comment.
To all those above comments abortion is murder.
Oh dear. Not every Democrat “supports” abortion or same sex marriage. Our politics have become so polarized and black-white. Life isn’t so clearcut, and neither should our politics be.
Oh dear. Democrats who don’t support abortion or same sex marriage need to leave that party and vote for an alternative. By voting Democrat you support the party that supports those things.
Political parties are not monolithic single-minded entities. They are supposed to be groups of people who MOSTLY approach governance along the same lines. We don’t have litmus tests to belong to a political party. Well, maybe Republicans do, but Dems have traditionally been more tolerant of varying points of view. And at one time, I think there were Republicans with varying points of view. Take abortion: I think it was only in the last ten years that abortion was the dividing line between whether one was Dem or Republican. This black-and-white view of politics is killing our country.
According to Catholic teaching, there are 9 ways of being an accessory to another’s sin.
By counsel.
By command.
By consent.
By provocation.
By praise or flattery.
By concealment.
By partaking.
By silence.
By defense of the ill done.
Slavery has been illegal for 155 years. Yes, we had a terrible military civil war to decide the issue. So slavery is ‘settled law’ and, in my humble opinion, questions regarding it are moot.
We are having a verbal civil war re abortion. At present, it is not a decided issue. As I have said before, I believe abortion is clearly against God’s Law. But until the Supreme Court overturns Roe, it is not ‘settled law’
Feliz Pasqua a todos! Happy Easter everyone!.
Happy Easter to you too Mike M but I’m not getting your point. Settled law determines whether something is moral and acceptable? Just because slavery is settled law it wasn’t prior to the 155 years you site is that correct? So abortion has been legal for almost 50 years. It is not settled law but does that determine whether it is right or wrong? Should we just accept it like those who accepted slavery prior to 155 years ago or should we fight to abolish this injustice until it is settled law.
mikem– “settled law” in a nation? Nothing in secular law is ever “settled.” Historical eras come and go. Good and evil lawmakers come and go, historically. Who is to decide the rights of God’s precious infants– to live or to die? Or, Your rights to live or to die, based on…what? Don’t be deceived. Anyone can come along at any time in history, and change things to suit themselves. But God’s Law is eternal. It is forever “settled.” Christians must only follow God’s Law. Go ask someone like St. Thomas More, the reason why. His country changed its marriage laws and revolutionized its religion, creating a false one– with false laws on the sacrament of marriage, to suit the king’s wishes. Many faithful Catholics were martyred as a result.
In England, after King Henry VIII’s break with the Catholic Church, and later, when Protestantism was well-established in England, laws were passed forbidding the Catholic Mass to be celebrated, and much persecution of Catholics resulted. Catholic priests and laymen were hunted down and killed. You would think this was a civilized, decent society, with many brilliant, well-educated leaders, and excellent laws– a great many fine historical figures made huge contributions to the world during this era, the Renaissance. You never know what leaders of a country may do…how about Nazi Germany?? California Gov. Ronald Reagan said in his inaugural address, on Jan. 5, 1967, “Freedom is a fragile thing and it’s never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by way of inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. And those in world history who have known freedom and have lost it have never known it again.” Christians must daily fight a holy battle against Satan, and always stand for God’s Laws, in all eras!
Maybe we should change the question: Instead of “Can Joe Biden receive Communion?” the question should be “Has Joe Biden condemned himself to hell by taking Communion if/when he has not repented of approving laws and policies that promote abortion?”
The “pew” research center probably didn’t question anyone really in a pew for this study. Only faithful practicing Catholics should be questioned. That would be a completely different result.
