I don’t agree with this coopting of Lent for their political cause. Lent is about personal spiritual discipline, not political activism. The left does it too. There was an article on a lefty Catholic site about how protesting against ICE can be considered a form of Lenten spiritual practice. When politics is your religion, you try to bring politics into religious practices. Both sides are guilty.
Working to save babies and their mothers from the violence of abortion is not political. There are some on the left, in addition to most, but not all, conservatives, who work to protect life. Abortion is not a matter of prudential judgement. It is an intrinsic evil. As Pope Francis said, it’s like hiring a hit man to kill a baby. That said, I do understand your legitimate concern about politics inappropriately using religion and, yes, “both sides” (of the political aisle) have been guilty of that. Yet, 40 Days for Life is not political activism. Have you ever participated? It’s about prayer, helping women and girls (as well as babies) and hopefully persuading other to act on behalf of life (which is a human act, not a political one). I encourage you and others to (re-)read Saint John Paul II’s Gospel of Life. It’s not political. Below is a summary of Evangelium Vitae from the US Bishops. You’ll see that neither document is a political one:

Am I to believe that saving babies from being murdered has nothing to do with almsgiving?
Reply to co-opting Lent: There is nothing political about praying at an abortion clinic to try to stop the scourge of abortion in California and across America. About 1 million unborn baby children are slaughtered in America each year. This must stop or face the judgement of Almighty God! End Abortion Now! Adoption is the Option.
California, poisoned and led to its destruction by the Democrats, desperately needs all of us to pray and work hard to overturn the Devil’s deadly grip, held by Gov. Gavin Newsom and his Democratic Party. Newsom just signed into law a bill giving $90 million in one-time emergency funding, to Planned Parenthood and other “reproductive health services” clinics, as the Trump Administration pulled federal funding for abortiions. $90 million to slay millions of helpless, innocent, beautiful unborrn children, who will never be loved, hugged and kissed in the welcoming arms of their mothers. And they will all never be given a “second chance” at life– with state-funded adoption services to loving homes. They will all just be violently killed. “Good riddance.” Like pest control. Please pray for the success of 40 Days for Life and similar endeavors.
The Deacon said it better than me.
