The following comes from a Jan. 13 story in the L.A. Times.
Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Garden Grove) said Tuesday that she was seriously considering a bid for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Barbara Boxer.
“For the past 18 years, I have focused on putting California’s working families first. From immigration reform to affordable healthcare to funding quality education, I have advocated for policies that give all families the same access to the American Dream,” Sanchez posted on her Facebook page. “Californians deserve a strong voice in Washington and I have never been afraid to speak up, which is why I am seriously considering running for the United States Senate in 2016.”
Sanchez posted her statement hours after California Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris officially kicked off her bid for the Senate seat, which will be decided in 2016.
Sanchez, 55, has represented a swath of Orange County in Congress since 1997. She won the seat in 1996 by defeating conservative incumbent Rep. Bob Dornan in an ugly race. Sanchez, who ran as a moderate Democrat, was the first person of Mexican descent to represent Orange County, long a conservative bastion, in Congress.
Other top Democrats seriously considering runs for the seat are former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer.
Sanchez lacks the name recognition of Harris or Villaraigosa and the wealth of Steyer. But as a Latina running from Southern California, she could tilt the dynamics in a race that has the potential to slice up the electorate by geography and demography.
Sanchez was featured in California Catholic Daily as one of the Faces of the American Holocaust on Sept. 2, 2012.
From the story:
“She has become one of the most adamant pro-abortion members of Congress, in spite of the fact that she identifies herself as a Catholic.
“In 2009, in a reprise of her 1996 campaign, Sanchez was allowed to speak at an event at St. Callistus Catholic Church in Garden Grove, where she participated in a ‘prayer vigil’….”
The current and former bishops of Orange have never seen fit to impose Canon 915 on this CINO politician. To cover all the bases, Cardinal Wuerl of Washington, D.C. has done nothing either (he has flat said that he won’t impose the Canon – I guess he thinks he knows better than Church law).
Of course, this is the same bishop who appointed a representative of a pro-abort, Democratic politician to one of his advisory panels a year ago, too.
You are right Bob, Wuerl also removes good and faithful priests when confronted by lesbians who advertise they are in a relationship the Church forbids. This is what passes as leadership today. St. Athanasius pray for us.
In giving this some more thought and since 2016 is a presidential election year, this would be the time for ALL the bishops in the United States to take Canon Law and the Catechism seriously and deal with CINO politicians and wannbe’s.
It has been obvious for far too long that the Catholic press has refrained from asking the bishops the “hard” questions concerning allowing CINO politicians a free ride. This also applies to the bishops collectively and their voting guide.
The court system has forgotten that justice also applies to Catholics in this country (abortion, SSM, etc).
This is truly the time for bishops to develop a spine and act!
totally agree
An interesting spin on the 1996 election. A different spin holds that Rep. Dornan thought that, like most members of Congress, he had a ‘safe’ seat. Rep Dornan failed to notice demographic changes in parts of the district. Ms. Sanchez concentrated on those changes. She mustered her supporters better. Safe seat goes ‘poof’ . New occupant.
I miss Bob B1 Dornan. It is incredible that Loretta Sanchez won because of an Hispanic name. Signs of the times.
Because most California Bishops do not teach according to the Doctrine of the Faith –
“Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition’ (1997).
The CCC comes in most languages and certainly is available in Spanish.
Abortion is an intrinsic evil, and Catholics may NOT vote for pro-abortion politicians and still receive Holy Communion.
